Bid $200,000 over asking price and lost

A colleague of mine represented a buyer who bid $200,000 over asking price on a house, and still lost! What is going on?! I myself advised a buyer to overbid "only" $50,0000 before the house even went on the market, because once the house went on the market the overbidding would be much higher. My buyer won, and loves living in the home.
